“I have always been enamored with the political process and important role that politicians play in our society,” Gemma said.  After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Boston College (1987), she took a position on the Michael Dukakis for President Committee, beginning in the field office and moving to administrative positions, ultimately as head of the Matching Funds division.  At campaign’s end, she stayed on to work with the Federal Election Commission auditors to close down the committee.  Duties included closing vendor accounts and campaign offices and detailing Matching Funds activities for legal staff.

Gemma previously worked as the Executive Assistant at the Cambridgeport Problem Center, a social services agency that provides mental health counseling and legal services to people with low income.  In this position, the lifelong Massachusetts resident managed the office, prepared the annual reports and led the fundraising efforts, which included direct-mail campaigns and grant research and writing.

Gemma has been an active Dedham resident where she and her husband David raised their girls.  She has been a town meeting member for 15 years.  Gemma was treasurer of Dedham Civic Pride for five years and on the board of the Dedham Education Foundation for ten years, serving as President for two years.  Other past volunteer roles in the town include president of the Greenlodge School PTO, chair of the education committee of the Dedham Junior Women’s Club, secretary of the Early Childhood Center PTO and a girl scout leader.  Gemma holds a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Cambridge College.
